Of course, Are You Garbage? gets tremendous value from Patreon’s infrastructure. They offer three membership tiers, exclusive shows like “Hard Feelings,” and use Patreon to manage fan Q&As and live show pre-sales. For them, the ecosystem might justify the cost (especially since they likely launched before 2025 and could be on a legacy rate anyway).

But the point stands: the more you earn, the more the 10% costs you in absolute dollars. And even if you’re “only” losing 10%, that’s still money you worked for that’s going to a platform instead of your pocket.

The trade-off is you manage more of the tech yourself and don’t have a built-in community like Patreon. Is 10% “Bad”?
